Simon Lereng Wilmont
Simon Lereng Wilmont (1975) is an intimate and compassionate Danish documentary filmmaker. His films often portray individuals and communities facing social and cultural challenges.
They focus on those living on the margins of society, by using a mix of observational footage and personal interviews to create emotionally engaging and thought-provoking documentaries.
One of Wilmont’s most notable works is the award-winning “The Distant Barking of Dogs” (2017). The feature-length documentary follows the daily life of a young boy living in a war-torn region of eastern Ukraine. Other films include “The Good Life”, that tells the story a young man trying to make a living as a farmer in rural Denmark; “The Will” follows a family dealing with the aftermath of a tragic accident; “Putin’s Olympic Dream” explores the political and social implications of Russia hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics and “The Earth Is Blue as an Orange” gives us a glimpse of a family in Ukraine who use filmmaking as a way to cope with the trauma of war.
Wilmont’s films have been screened at numerous international film festivals. He received critical acclaim for the sensitivity and depth of insight in his films. His latest film, “A House Made of Splinters”, won him a Best Director Award at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
