Mike Day
Mike Day is a Scottish director and cinematographer known for his impactful work in the film industry. Formerly a lawyer, he followed his passion for storytelling and founded Intrepid Cinema in 2009. Day embarked on his filmmaking journey by setting sail on a boat in the North Atlantic to create his first documentary, “The Guga Hunters of Ness,” commissioned by the BBC. It was during this time at sea that he encountered a group of Faroese sailors, which sparked the inspiration for his next acclaimed film, “The Islands and the Whales.” This captivating documentary garnered widespread recognition, winning multiple awards including the 60th CINE Golden Eagle Award, earning a BAFTA nomination, and receiving a Peabody Award in 2017.
Day’s films have been supported and funded by prestigious institutions such as the Sundance Institute, San Francisco Film Society, and Creative Scotland, among others. Day’s work has been screened by broadcasters worldwide, including the BBC, ARTE, ZDF, NRK, DR, and POV on PBS. The theatrical releases of his films have captivated audiences in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia.
